In our film we have created meaning through our choice of mise en scene and cinematography.
We created a feeling of isolation by using a setting like the woods, which is often synonymous with being alone and helpless. The fog in the background also creates an eerie atmosphere which is typical of horror films, by obscuring the distance it also feeds into the fear of the unknown. The lighting on set was also completely natural, which creates realism and doesn't ruin the atmosphere with the use of artificial light. Also, at the end of the film, the characters move to a slightly more urban looking area with a road which creates a safer, more familiar feeling.
The props and costume are also used to provide context to the characters age and background. The costumes of the "victims" are very typical of teens that have just been to college, which subliminally provides that context. The use of props is also important, with phones being the reason for most of the ignorance of the killer seen in the film. The knife and mask that the killer is holding and wearing also makes them seem like more of a threat, as their face is obscured and the knife is a weapon, which is associated with injury. This is part of neals theory of repetition and difference, as we have followed that stereotype of a masked killer in slasher films, however, the difference we have presented is that the victims seem unbothered by these threatening things.
Our shots such as the POV's are used to create anxiety within the audience as they can only see what the character himself is seeing, creating a limited scope the audience can see through, it also helps immerse the audience further. We also use comedy to relieve any tension created by subverting expectations. The lack of angled shots also represents the lack of the teens fear and doesn't create a dynamic where the killer holds all the power, this is a subversion of the horror genre, similar to scream, where you can see ghostface being clumsy, reinforcing that he's only human.
